Laura Kabell Lundberg talks about her experience of being a Programme Rep for her MA in Promotional Media…
‘I represented my programme together with one of my lovely classmates. Our main task was to collect feedback, concerns, positive stories and complaints from our coursemates and bring it to the department at the Departmental Student-Staff Forums. These forums took place once in the autumn and once in the spring. They were very casual and informal, but we still managed to discuss a lot of things.
The department would also send us tasks and other activities that we might want to take part in. I got involved in the Periodic Programme Reviews with staff and academics from other universities and I joined the Industry Student Partnership Panel for the upcoming BA programme in Promotional Media where I discussed the brand-new curriculum with professors, staff and industry people.
I was nervous about speaking out about complaints and concerns to a group of professors and talented students in a foreign language (I’m Danish), but as soon as I’d uttered the first words it wasn’t too bad at all. In fact, it was actually a really empowering experience. At all meetings, forums and panels, I’ve felt respected and heard, and it has only made me want to speak out more.
Importantly, I do believe I’ve managed to voice the concerns of my fellow international students and I’ve made sure that the department is now taking steps to create even more including and welcoming programmes.
It’s also been quite fun being a Programme Rep. If you like having a say, having friendly discussions with fellow students and staff, and being part of the ‘behind the scenes’ work of the university experience, then you should definitely become a Programme Rep.
It looks good on my CV, I’ve been able to network with a lot of different people from the university and beyond, and I’ve become more confident in speaking out in public about important topics. It’s been a win-win and I would recommend it to everyone.’
