Getting to Know the Local Area

New Cross Highlights

New Cross may be small but there’s plenty to explore - here are some of our favourite cafes, pubs and shops:

As a student you will quickly learn you can never have enough caffeine in your life. Here’s our selection of the top places to get your fix, meet a friend or even plan your next campaign!

The SU Cafe
We have a brand new cafe on the first floor of the SU building serving fresh coffee from a local roastery as well as cheap and cheerful food options. Grab a quick breakfast on the go or order lunch with friends in your lunch break.

Goldsmiths Cafe
“Goldsmiths Caf” is your go to for a baked potato or fried breakfast the morning after the night before. Service is quick and comes with a smile!

London Particular
Serves classic English food with a modern twist. Food and coffee is all locally sourced and there are benches outside for a sunny day. Head next door to the LP bar for an aperitif.

Out of the Brew
An arts cafe with opportunities to show work and host events, Out of the Brew has the best ‘secret garden’ in New Cross out the back.

The Red Lion Coffee Co.
A cafe for coffee lovers, the roasts here are delicious and the staff are enthusiastic and helpful. It’s a quiet spot so doubles up as a great place for meetings or a post uni drink (they have local beers and wine on tap).

Every two hour lecture deserves a reward, and whether that’s a pizza and a pint or simply a fresh soda and lime, here’s the pick of our favourite watering holes.

The SU Bar
We’ve changed up the bar on the top floor of the SU! So come and try a range of beers, wines and premium spirits at the most competitive prices in New Cross. Play a game of pool or enjoy the view from the balcony, all without leaving campus!

The Fat Walrus
Formerly The Old Haberdasher, The Fat Walrus now serves diner style food with booths and table service too.

The Marquis of Granby
A New Cross institution, The Marquis is the ultimate post lecture, post match venue. It’s a cheap and cheerful pub with a jukebox, pool table and Taytos crisps.

The New Cross House
An up-market pub with pizza and pint deals, a great craft beer selection and a garden space out the back too. Oh, and they have their own pizza oven!

The SU Shop
Our on campus shop (found in the Richard Hoggart Building) is a great place to grab things on the go - pick up a meal deal, pick 'n' mix and even arts materials. Plus this is where you can find all Goldsmiths merch!

The Word Bookshop

The Word is a new academic bookshop based in New Cross right by campus. Discounts are available for students and Goldsmiths staff too.

Sainsbury’s at New Cross Gate
Your nearest large supermarket is the Sainsbury's Superstore which has a petrol station, a Lloyd’s pharmacy and a cafe too.

Plus find various international food stores as detailed online here.

Other Local Area Highlights

During the warmer months Frank’s rooftop bar in Peckham provides great views of the city whilst Bar Story down the road does great cocktail deals at a daily happy hour. If beer is more your thing, Stormbird in Camberwell has a really extensive selection (you should see their menu).

Despite the UK’s un-foodie reputation, we think London has some of the best tastes on offer from around the world! Try the lightest, fluffiest Taiwanese buns at Mr. Bao in Peckham, cross the road for European style brunch options at Pedler or pop down to Silk Road in Camberwell for incredible Northern Chinese dumplings and noodles.

Can’t decide? Head to Brixton Village or Model Market for a range of food options from all corners of the globe.

We’re lucky at Goldsmiths to have work by international and up and coming artists available right on our doorstep and the South East London art scene is only growing! See exhibitions, live art and film at South London Gallery in Camberwell, see off-site projects by Peckham Platform as they build their new gallery space and head to Bold Tendencies for a programme of visual art and classical music.
