What are the proposed plans, and when will they happen?
Wednesday 25 March 2026: Goldsmiths Council approves the Future Goldsmiths programme, allowing the University to proceed with plans to make £22 million in recurrent savings and undertake wider institutional restructuring.
Thursday 23 April 2026: The process begins with Professional Services staff. Restructuring proposals for Professional Services teams, and academic-related departments such as CALL and TaLIC, are shared with staff and trade unions. The University also launches a Voluntary Severance Scheme for Professional Services staff. 269 professional services staff and academics in academic-related departments are informed that they are in scope of redundancy.
April–June 2026: A 45-day consultation period takes place between the University and recognised trade unions on these proposals. During this period, proposals can be challenged, alternatives can be suggested, and concerns about the impact on staff and services can be raised. There is no guarantee that any alternatives suggested or feedback raised will be taken into account.
June 2026: The consultation period closes and the University reviews feedback, A second Equality Impact Assessment is undertaken on the final plans, and responses from trade unions are considered before the University determines next steps. Voluntary severance applicants also receive the outcomes of their applications.
June–July 2026: Individual consultation and other staffing processes take place for affected staff.
July 2026: Final decisions are approved through University governance processes and notices may be issued to affected staff.
August 2026: Staff leaving through voluntary severance or other agreed arrangements, including compulsory redundancy, are expected to depart the University.
Autumn Term 2026 onwards: The University has indicated that restructuring affecting academic departments is expected to begin in September 2026, at which point academics will be informed that they are in scope of redundancy, and the process which Professional Services staff were put through between April and August 2026 will begin for Academic staff. Therefore, further changes will continue into the 2026/27 academic year.
