Event Description

Islamophobia in Queer Spaces

Islamophobia in Queer Spaces

Wed 26 February 2020 16:00-17:00 - Liberation Room (downstairs in the SU)

Join Goldsmiths SU and Bury Your Gays for a workshop on islamophobia in queer spaces run by Malak Mayet.

Malak Mayet is a queer, non binary student activist and political educator. Malak has represented British Muslims nationally and internationally, in mainstream media. In this interactive workshop, the intersection of islamophobia and queerphobia is explored, with a particular focus on how this plays out in the lived realities of queer Muslims. This workshop is comprehensive: it helps the wider queer/Muslim community understand how to support their queer Muslim comrades, it provides a space for queer Muslims to discover and understand our identities and experiences, and it allows any activist interested in queer and race liberation grapple with important concepts, such as homonationalism.
