South East Asian Short Film Screening pt. 2

FREE EVENT - 2 NIGHTS. Join us for a showcase of South East Asian short films from Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Aiming to increase the awareness of South East Asian screen culture, this event helps to raise the profile of South East Asian filmmakers. Each short film reflects a current social issue in the country. 

Refreshments (South East Asian desserts and snacks) will be served after the screening. No booking required, just click 'Going' on the Facebook event.

 

TUESDAY SCREENING PROGRAMME

MYANMAR
She, Director: Kyal Yi Lin Six, 2017 / 32 minutes, In Burmese with English subtitles
A Buddhist nun, a Christian nun, and a Muslim woman in Myanmar. Their lives, their experiences, and the challenges that they face.
Themes: gender equality, peace and religion, women empowerment

MALAYSIA
Cage (Sangkar), Director: Sharifah Amani, Writer: Susan C Bansin, 2010 / 13 mins, In Malay with English subtitles

Sangkar tells a story about a young girl who falls in love with a schoolmate and eventually makes the ultimate sacrifice to marry into his family. The short film is part of the HerStory Film Project which brings together five women artists to make five short films exploring various issues impacting women.
Themes: Child marriage, women empowerment, the push-pull dynamics of being a woman in a Malay Muslim society, caught between duty and aspiration.

CAMBODIA
Two Girls Against the Rain, Writer/Director: Sao Sopheak, 2017 / 16 mins, In Khmer with English subtitles
How two women fell in love, survived the Khmer Rouge and transformed a community. Two women, Soth Yun and Sem Eang, met and fell in love in one of the Khmer Rouge regime’s notorious forced labour units. After the Khmer era, during which two million Cambodians were killed, they decided to live together in the province of Takeo, despite the disapproval of their families and the local community. As Cambodia inches towards acceptance of LGBT people, Yun and Eang, who are now middle-aged and raising several of their nephews and nieces, want to get married.

VIETNAM
Below the Boulevard, Writer/Director: Nguyen Khánh Ly, 2016 / 30 mins, In Vietnamese with English subtitles
A story about a 60-year-old disabled Vietnam war veteran who live on an old boat with his family in Ho Chi Minh city. An ex-soldier who was heavily disabled during the war, he is haunted by its terrors, yet he is filled with gratefulness in his present life although their peaceful life barely meets basic living conditions. His only comfort in the midst of all the harshness is found in the hope for a better future for their young daughter.

THAILAND
Auntie Maam Has Never Had A Passport, Writer/Director: Sorayos Prapapan, 2014 / 14 mins, In Thai with English subtitles
In 2014, Thailand was torn apart by mass demonstrations that resulted in the umpteenth military takeover. Not the airiest of backgrounds for a playful, political satire. Auntie Naam is a foot masseuse but sometimes acts in independent films. One day, she is invited abroad to a film festival.
Themes: Politics, travel, older women
