Candidate for the position of Education Officer

Chanel

Goldsmiths is a university shaped by creativity, critical thinking and collective care. It is a place where students challenge ideas, support one another and build communities that extend beyond the classroom. However, many students still experience barriers that make education feel unclear, isolating or difficult to navigate. I believe every student deserves an academic experience that feels accessible, supportive and empowering.

I am a third year student studying BA Applied Psychosocial and Psychotherapeutic Studies, and throughout my time at Goldsmiths I have taken on roles centred on advocacy, representation and community building. I currently serve as Student Subject Co ordinator for Therapies, Student Representative for BAPPS and an EBE Representative, working closely with students and staff to improve learning experiences. Alongside this, I am President of the Equity Awards Society, a Student Ambassador, a Peer Facilitator for the CARE Project and the Student Lead for Care Experienced and Estranged Students. Each of these roles has strengthened my understanding of what students need in order to thrive academically and personally.

I am running for Education Officer because representation should lead to meaningful change. Students should feel confident that their concerns are heard and acted upon.

My manifesto focuses on three priorities which are Academic Quality, Community Support and Justice in Education.

Academic quality begins with clarity and accountability. Through my experience as a Course Representative and Student Subject Co ordinator, students have consistently shared concerns about inconsistent teaching, unclear expectations and inaccessible learning materials. These challenges affect confidence, wellbeing and academic success. Students deserve consistent communication about assessments, deadlines and marking criteria across all departments.

I have already worked alongside TALIC to improve the structure and accessibility of the VLE, helping create clearer and more inclusive digital learning spaces. Accessible design benefits everyone, particularly disabled, neurodivergent, mature and commuting students. As Education Officer, I will continue pushing for transparent marking practices, reliable feedback and course materials that genuinely support learning rather than create additional stress.

Community is at the heart of Goldsmiths. Students succeed when they feel connected to one another and supported throughout their studies. Across my roles as Peer Facilitator and Student Lead for Care Experienced and Estranged Students, I have seen how belonging directly impacts academic confidence.

I want to establish peer led study groups across departments to encourage collaboration and shared learning. These spaces would help students build confidence, reduce academic pressure and create stronger connections within their courses. I will also advocate for improved collaboration between wellbeing services, academic departments and student representatives so students can access support earlier and more easily.

Through my work with the Equity Awards Society, I have supported students in accessing awards, bursaries and opportunities that many were previously unaware of. I will introduce workshops and accessible guidance so all students can benefit from the opportunities available to them.

Goldsmiths has a strong tradition of social awareness and critical engagement. Education should reflect those values by being fair, inclusive and responsive to student experiences. I will advocate for inclusive curricula that represent diverse voices and lived realities while challenging barriers within EC processes and assessments that disproportionately affect marginalised students.

As someone working closely with care experienced and estranged students, I understand how institutional systems can unintentionally exclude. I will push for transparency and fairness in academic procedures so every student feels respected and supported.

I have demonstrated my commitment through consistent action across multiple roles within the university community. As your Education Officer, I will remain approachable, visible and dedicated to ensuring student voices lead to lasting change.
