Candidate for the position of International Students' Officer

Saras

Because this position shouldn’t be empty.

I am Saras, I’m an international student. I’m running for this position because last time this position was vacant, which is the main reason for this application.

It is difficult for any group to have their specific needs addressed if there is no one available to communicate them. Being an international student involves a process of adaptation that is often overlooked. Moving to a new country is a significant undertaking, and doing so without an established community or an immediate community creates specific challenges.

The transition is about the time and energy required to manage everything in an unfamiliar environment. When you are navigating everything alone, from housing and local systems to the act of finding a social circle, the process is complicated and sometimes isolating . This manifesto is not about grand intentions; it is a recognition that these difficulties exist and that they should not have to be managed in isolation. The reality is that help is needed, and it is important that this help is available and understood by those who provide it.

The objective here is to ensure that the international student experience is treated with a basic level of realism. There is often a gap between official university resources and the actual day-to-day experience of a student living abroad. Whether this role is held by me or someone else, the priority should remain on making the daily reality of living here more manageable.

It is important to have someone in this position who understands that support doesn't always need to be a formal event. Sometimes, it just means having a clearer way to find information or a space to meet others who are dealing with the same circumstances, To feel safe, supported and truly included. If these changes are brought about, it benefits the entire community. The focus is simply on ensuring that help is there when it is needed.

Information Access and Clarity There is a lot of trial and error involved in settling into a new country. The goal is to create a more efficient way to share practical advice on housing, bills, and local systems so that students do not have to figure everything out by themselves. This is about making existing support services more visible and easier to access so the process is less confusing.

Low Pressure Community Spaces Many university events can feel forced or overly formal. There should be more opportunities for international students to connect in a way that is natural and low-stress. Creating these spaces allows for a reliable community to form without the pressure of organized networking or high-energy activities.

Peer Mentorship and Support Establishing a simple way for students who have been here longer to share grounded and practical advice with those who are just arriving. Having a bridge between current students and new arrivals ensures that the knowledge gained from experience is passed on to those who need it most.

Consistent Advocacy This involves acting as a regular point of contact so that the specific concerns of international students are included when university decisions are being made. The aim is to ensure our perspective is a standard part of the conversation rather than an afterthought, focusing on the actual difficulties of living abroad.

Practical Resource Management The focus is on building lasting improvements that make the university a more stable place for those far from home. This means ensuring that the progress made for international students is consistent and that resources are actually relevant to the international context and easily reachable when they are needed.
