I'm running to be your Global Ethnic Majority Students' Officer because I believe that representation leads to change. As a Black student who cares deeply about racial justice, I understand how race and ethnicity shape our experiences at Goldsmiths. I will work to close the attainment gap, amplify GEM voices, and ensure the university is accountable, transparent, and actively anti-racist.
I have previously campaigned to raise awareness around homelessness, housing insecurity, school exclusions, and the lack of representation facing marginalised communities. I am passionate about campaigning for people's rights, especially where race affects wellbeing, opportunity and achievement. Many GEM students experience isolation, imposter syndrome, or discrimination that goes unaddressed. I want to change that.
The attainment gap between white and GEM students is not just a number, it reflects structural inequalities, such as unequal access to education, mentorship and support. I believe Goldsmiths must go beyond statements of solidarity and commit to measurable action. As GEM Officer, I will work closely with the Welfare and Liberation Sabbatical Officer to ensure any concerns are consistently raised at the highest levels of the university.
I stand for empowerment, accountability, and transparency. That means creating spaces where GEM students can feel safe to share their experiences, pushing for structural improvements, and making sure the university clearly communicates what progress is being made. Representation should not be tokenistic; it should result in real change and inclusion.
My Key Actions:
Close the Attainment Gap: Push for transparent reporting on attainment data and lobby for targeted academic support, mentoring schemes, and early intervention for GEM students.
Create Safe & Empowering Spaces: Organise regular GEM forums and listening sessions to ensure student voice directly shape policy decisions.
Strengthening Academic Support: Advocate for inclusive curriculum, diversified reading lists, and staff training on anti-racist teaching practices.
Improving Accountability: Work with leadership to set clear, measurable goals on racial equity and provide termly progress updates to students.
Build Community & Visibility: Collaborate with GEM and non-GEM societies to create projects that reflect the diversity of our community, and host events celebrating culture, identity, and student achievement.
