Candidate for the position of Union Chair

Annabell Knapp

Making Student Voice A Priority
As a PhD student and former MA student at Goldsmiths for four years, I have seen
firsthand how little university management values student voices. Throughout my
negotiations with University Management as part of Goldsmiths for Palestine, it has
become painfully clear how little they care about student voices. As union chair, I am
determined to transform this silence into a powerful voice for meaningful change!

1.) Increasing Student Voice
As Union Chair, I am committed to fiercely amplifying student voices and rigorously
holding university management accountable. For too long, students have been
pushed aside, with decisions driven by profit and shareholder interests rather than
the genuine needs of the students we serve. In my role on the university council, I
will champion transparency in discussions and decisions made in student forums,
ensuring students' concerns are prioritized and never ignored. Furthermore, I will
actively expand opportunities for students to voice their opinions—not only to
university management but also within the Student Union—making it more
accessible, open, and responsive to their needs.

2.) Enhancing Accountability
As Chair, I have been and will continue to be committed to conducting meetings with
the utmost professionalism and fairness, ensuring that every concern and motion
from you is truly heard and considered. I will diligently hold the Student Union
accountable for implementing passed motions and demand transparency when they
fail to do so. Moreover, I will relentlessly advocate on your behalf, holding university
management accountable during council meetings, making it impossible for them to
ignore our voice and needs. Together, we can create meaningful change.

3.) Democratize the University
The only way to truly empower student voices is to democratize the university.
Without this fundamental change, student voices will continue to be dismissed and
undervalued. As a student council member, I have been fighting for democratization
and exposing those who seek to run the university undemocratically — driven by
personal agendas, career ambitions, or profit motives that undermine students’
interests and voice.

Increasing student voice and representation is more vital now than ever before. Your
voice matters, and by voting for me, you'll be empowering me to amplify your
concerns, ideas, and motions to the university council. Together, we can ensure that
student voices are not only heard but prioritized, leading to meaningful change on
our campus. Let's work together to make our university a place where every student
has a real and lasting impact.
