Candidate for the position of President

Tommy Mitchell

Goldsmiths has always stood for creativity, courage, and community. But being part of this university today can feel harder than it should. Students are balancing rising living costs, academic pressure, mental health challenges, and uncertainty about the future — all while trying to make the most of a truly unique educational experience. I’m running for President of Goldsmiths Students’ Union because I believe student leadership should meet this moment with honesty, energy, and action.

My vision is simple: a Students’ Union that works for every student, not just the loudest voices — one that is practical in its support, ambitious in its goals, and rooted in the diverse reality of Goldsmiths life.

First, I want to make the SU more accessible and responsive. Too many students feel disconnected from decision-making or unsure how to make their voices heard. I will introduce regular open forums, transparent reporting on SU actions, and clearer pathways for student-led campaigns. Representation should not be symbolic — it should lead to change you can see.

Second, I will prioritise the cost-of-living crisis. Financial pressure shapes everything from attendance to wellbeing. I will push for expanded hardship support, more affordable food options on campus, and stronger partnerships with local organisations to provide student discounts and resources. No one’s education should be defined by what they can afford.

Third, I want to strengthen academic advocacy. Whether it’s course changes, contact hours, or feedback systems, students deserve consistency and accountability. I will work to ensure course reps are empowered, trained, and genuinely listened to — not treated as a formality.

Fourth, community matters. Goldsmiths is at its best when it feels collaborative rather than isolating. I will support societies and student-led initiatives with better funding access and simpler processes, while creating more inclusive social and creative spaces that reflect the diversity of our student body.

Fifth, wellbeing must be treated as essential, not optional. I will campaign for improved mental health support and clearer signposting to services, while promoting preventative initiatives — from peer networks to stress-free creative events — that build resilience before crisis hits.

Finally, I believe the SU should be a bridge between students and the wider world. Goldsmiths sits in a vibrant, complex part of London. I will strengthen connections with the local community, ensuring students benefit from — and contribute to — the place we study in.

Leadership is not about slogans; it’s about listening, acting, and following through. I don’t claim to have every answer, but I bring commitment, transparency, and a determination to make the SU something students trust and rely on.

Goldsmiths students are imaginative, politically aware, and deeply invested in fairness. You deserve representation that matches that spirit — grounded in real needs and focused on real outcomes.
