Candidate for the position of Welfare and Liberation Officer

Ava Dora Mia

Let me be your voice, your safety, your advocate!

University can be an empowering, milestone moment in our lives... but it can also be isolating. Especially for women, estrange students, and care leavers who often face financial, emotional and personal barriers behind closed doors. As an estranged student and a girl studying politics, I'm very passionate about fighting for those who feel unheard. I want to make sure that welfare isn't just a buzzword, but something we can all feel in our daily lives!

If elected, I will aim to:

  • Advocate for women's safety and wellbeing by pushing for clearer reporting systems for harassment and assault, ending period poverty by offering period product provision on campus, and collaborate with nightlife venues the university to ensure safer student spaces.
  • Advocate for estranged and care-leaver students by creating clearer signposting to bursaries and other financial support, push for more support surrounding housing and homelessness, and create a dedicated peer support network so nobody feels like they're navigating university alone.
  • Strength mental health and welfare services, working with the university, students' union, and charities to provide better resources, accessibility and awareness.

I believe that Welfare should not be an afterthought, a 'you-reach-out-to-us-first' service, but inclusive and proactive! I will listen, act, and represent those who feel their voices are not heard.

Vote for me to be your welfare officer - because support should never be optional!
