Rooted in Community. Empowered by Action. Upholding Goldsmith's Legacy
Hey Goldsmiths!
I’m Starr, a third-year Applied Theatre student, and I’m excited to run for Campaigns & Activities Officer because I genuinely love Goldsmiths—its people, its legacy, and its future.
Goldsmiths has always been a hub for radical thinking, creativity, and activism, where we challenge norms and work together to make change. However, I’ve noticed a concerning shift—Goldsmiths is becoming more bureaucratic, disconnected, and less accessible to students. We’re losing what makes us unique. As a member of marginalized communities and a participant in campus actions, I’m determined to protect the spirit of Goldsmiths by advocating for an unapologetically radical student body.
My Vision for Goldsmiths:
Strengthening Community through Accessible Events
I’ll make room bookings easier and more accessible, ensuring everyone can showcase their work and create community-building events. The current online system is confusing and gatekept, preventing students from using essential spaces like studios, the cinema, and the theatre. I’ll work to simplify access to these spaces.
Bridging the Gap Between Students and Management
Students often feel disconnected from management. While previous officers have tried to address this, much remains to be done. I’ll strengthen communication between students and management to ensure our voices are not only heard but respected in decision-making.
Supporting Campaigns, Mutual Aid, and Mental Health Resources
Goldsmiths has a history of student-led activism, such as the Goldsmiths for Palestine campaign and mutual aid projects like CARE. I’ll support these initiatives by ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive. I’ll also make mental health services more accessible—especially for first-year students who may find it difficult to navigate the system. The current digitalization and clunky websites often deter students from seeking help when they need it most.
Challenging Incremental Change: We Need Lasting, Radical Impact
A lot of what I’m passionate about—accessible room bookings, supporting marginalized groups, improving mental health resources—are things previous candidates have pledged to do. While some progress has been made, it’s often incremental. Students’ needs are being overlooked, and it’s time to demand lasting change.
My experience in political organizing gives me the tools and strategy needed to push for real, meaningful impact. We’ve seen symbolic progress before, especially with how management reacted to campus protests last year, but now it’s time to push for a student union that is unapologetically radical. Management is banking on students being passive and apolitical so they can continue pushing exploitative policies. But I believe in the power of this student body to create lasting change.
Students deserve a union that is bold, loud, and proud in its activism. We need a union that stands firm in defending Goldsmiths’ radical roots—where our voices are heard, our needs are met, and we are equipped to face the future with strength and solidarity. Let’s make that change, not just for today, but for the Goldsmiths we want to build tomorrow.
