Candidate for the position of President

Gammorah Britton-Gibson

As students at Goldsmiths, we are promised a radical, transformative & unique educational experience, this promise, rests on the reputation of a community of staff and students that are committed to social justice and protecting and enhancing critical knowledges, for many of us, this is the reason we choose to study here; this reputation is also something that is promoted openly by the University in its methods of marketing itself, turned into a lucrative brand.

The reality though we face when actually coming here is of an institution that disregards our demands and resists are attempts to fight for change on and off-campus.

It is of a student experience defined by feeling isolated, unsupported when we demand the support we need and deserve, only made worse in an environment of increasing precarity of professional and academic staff now without the ability, resources and time to provide this support inside and outside our courses needed to fulfil our potential.

I see the Student Union as a radical campaigning space but also and indivisible from this - one that must prioritise improving the student experience and addressing immediate needs of students ; this means better and easier Extenuating Circumstances processes, creating an accessible environment through more specialised support without students feeling penalised for expressing what you need and in this fighting institutional ableism, more opportunities for students to themselves create the events and the education spaces they want to see out of their-University and above all addressing and delivering the education students want.

When staff and their power and knowledges are threatened students, our education and our power is also threatened; that is why solidarity is not only a moral but it is also a logical need. This election is happening in the context of the so called ‘transformation programme’, a project that will lead to cuts and restructuring of courses, faculty structure and changes to student support services, means this is a vital year for student democracy at Goldsmiths.

The changes we are currently undergoing will profoundly affect students and our education at Goldsmiths and our ability to continue our studies and threatens the institution itself yet the student union and wider student body were not meaningfully consulted about these changes that have now have now been forced upon us.

In a marketized education environment we are treated as consumers but not even given the rights this implies; an alternative to this logic and presenting a way out of Goldsmiths financial problems through a re-prioritisation of the students and staff that make Goldsmiths, a genuine transformation through care and solidarity is the only solution.

As President of the SU I would:

- Work with staff at Goldsmiths to fight against the cuts to this institution.

- Whilst standing in solidarity with our members of staff throughout the coming turbulence and possibility of Industrial Action, I will work to protect students through this difficult period with extra support and to force management to take account of this disruption to student life.

-Preserve and honour the legacy of GARA (Goldsmiths Anti-Racist Action) and implement demands through building up the power of liberation networks to work toward a Goldsmiths that is actively Antiracist

- Work with Goldsmiths for Palestine to continue to work toward fighting the complicity of Goldsmiths in the occupation of Palestine and key to this-supporting-connections with Palestinian higher education institutions

-ensure student led campaigns and extra-curricular activities including society, sports club and other campaigning is thoroughly recognised and supported, including implementing accessible assessment methods -secure international students rights by implementing a long-term international feedback and support framework from the point of application
