NOUR MATAR

Hi! Nour here, your Welfare and Liberation Officer, and I am running to continue serving as the Welfare and Liberation Officer for next year.

By the end of this year, the officers team and I will be finishing our contributions including but not limited to:

  • Reviewing student experience at Goldsmiths.

  • Advocating for students rights on campus, and supporting student campaigns.

  • Working with various teams in the SU, including the advice team on student cases through difficulties in the students services.

  • Working to hold the college accountable to their commitments to students.

  • Working on the Archive Project.

  • Fighting the marketisation of students, especially International students.

  • Working with liberation officers to connect students and deliver the marginalised groups voices.

  • Working on improving student engagement at the Students Union.

Working closely this year with the students enabled me to spot the highly interconnected struggles and issues in the students' experience, and I want to preserve the legacy of student-led liberation and campaigning at the SU and across our community and history. I will continue working to deliver the following, which we have started working on:

  • Connecting systems of oppression on Campus to distil and dismantle the systemic ways in which they are upheld at Goldsmiths.

  • Continuing to campaign against the marketisation of higher education, especially for International Students, raising awareness of the hostile environment and harmful visa restrictions.

  • Focusing on International Students issues within all aspects of the students experience, building accountable feedback loops and support frameworks

  • Continuing to provide support for students who come from less represented backgrounds by working closely with the liberation officers, and finding new ways to activate the liberation groups beyond the current structure.

  • Finding and supporting new alternative political spaces in campus to ensure engagement and community-led learning

  • Ensuring students' protection in the Transformation Programme and beyond by following up with the Student Survey, campaigning against all negative consequences to students services as a whole, such as issues around enrollments, appeals, complaints, finance, and wellbeing services.

  • Building on our demands for student support during the Transformation Programme such as enhanced support for marginalised students in campus through Wellbeing, Library Subject Librarians, Careers, Immigration and Registry services.

In addition to the above, I will also:

  • Campaign to establish there are accessible and culturally-competent support services at Goldsmiths, from Wellbeing to Registry, ensuring greater language, culture and political competency for marginalised students such as BME, refugee students and students from conflict zones.

  • Connect all student-facing services, forms and procedures to ensure clear communication and accessibility to ensure all students are empowered to champion their needs, wellbeing and strength within the academic experience and beyond.

  • Finish building the Archive project.

  • Campaign for transportation and housing support bursaries for all students.

  • Create student support drop-ins at the College.

My experience in the SU has been positive and enriching. I have seen firsthand how strong and connected our community is, and also how disengaged management is from us and the ground. I am committed to championing our history of student-led, community-led pedagogy, campaigning and action. I will ensure we work on keeping the Goldsmiths that we know and love, securing students’ rights and advocating proper delivery of pastoral care at the College. Vote for me in the upcoming elections, and let's create a brighter future for all of us. Thank you.
