Keeping our spaces and each other safe is everyone's responsibility.

Education is at the heart of CARE’s mission, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to challenge sexual violence and other harmful behaviours. By providing accessible, trauma-informed learning opportunities, we empower individuals to become informed advocates, active bystanders, and community leaders in creating safer spaces.

Objectives

  • Raising Awareness – Providing students with accurate, comprehensive information about sexual violence, consent, and related issues to foster a culture of respect and accountability.

  • Empowering Action – Equipping students with practical skills to recognise, prevent, and respond to incidents of harm, whether through bystander intervention or survivor support.

  • Creating Safe Learning Spaces – Ensuring all educational initiatives are trauma-informed, inclusive, and accessible, so students feel safe engaging with sensitive topics.

  • Encouraging Critical Dialogue – Facilitating open discussions that challenge harmful social norms and systemic issues contributing to sexual violence and discrimination.

  • Reducing Stigma and Promoting Understanding – Increasing understanding of the complexities of sexual violence and the varying social recognition of harmful behaviours, creating a culture where survivors feel heard, believed, and supported.

Active Bystander Training Workshops

The workshops are student-led, delivered by peer facilitators who received training in safeguarding, equality, diversity & inclusion, trauma-informed facilitation, groupwork, responding to disclosures, and reflective practice. Immediate signposting for concerns or disclosures is available through the CARE Project Coordinator and the Advice Team.

We can also run bespoke sessions for your society, club, student group, staff team or department, to book email bystander@goldsmithssu.org

Workshops do tackle topics that can be potentially triggering. This is why we have a group agreement discussed at the beginning of every session which includes:
  • Participation by choice

  • Self-care

  • Step up, step back

  • Active listening

  • Confidentiality & limits to confidentiality

  • Harm reduction & content warnings

If at any point you feel uncomfortable in one of our training sessions, but are still interested in learning about the subject, there are a few options available to you:
  • Try signing up to a different session - participants shape the direction of the workshop to a certain extent and being in a group with other people might improve the experience.

  • Email bystander@goldsmithssu.org to request a 1-to-1 session with our peer facilitators.
