Faculty, School, and Programme Student Representatives are here to listen to student feedback and relay it to their academic department leaders. If you have a suggestion for improving your course, reach out to your representative.

Whether you're doing a PhD, a Master's or an undergraduate course, student reps are here to support you.

How do Student Representatives work?

Student representatives are categorised as either Faculty Reps, School Reps, or Programme Reps. Each School has a maximum of five undergraduate (UG) and two postgraduate (PG) representatives.

To ensure effective representation, all School Reps receive support from a Faculty Rep, with each Faculty Rep assigned to assist two schools. School Reps, in turn, represent the entire school.

Recruitment takes place during two periods of the academic year to ensure there is a dedicated Student representative for each department. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, make sure you keep your eyes peeled to the SU website for further updates.

How Student Representatives Operate, Work, and Provide Feedback:

  • All Programme Representatives report to School Representatives through meetings or messaging, based on their preferred method of communication. They are trained on effective communication practices.

  • This academic year, we have hired School Representatives to represent the entire School rather than hiring representatives for individual departments. They have received training on how to navigate this structure.

  • All School Representatives are encouraged to collaborate in identifying common themes within the School. They should decide what issues can be addressed locally (e.g., by speaking directly with staff) or at a higher level (e.g., by bringing it to a formal meeting).

  • All School Representatives will receive invitations to Student Staff Forums (SSFs). These forums are held once per term and involve School Representatives, the Associate Head of School for Student Experience, and other relevant academic staff members.

  • Faculty Representatives engage in direct conversations with senior staff, such as Deputy Deans of the Faculties. They also provide support to School Representatives and may attend SSFs to offer assistance if invited.

Our requests to Associate Heads of School for Education and Student Experience:

  1. School reps should meet with their Associate Head of School (AHoS) twice a term. They can also reach out to the AHoS about any important issues that need to be addressed.

  2. Students would like support in finding program representatives in schools that haven’t filled these positions yet.

  3. School representatives should be invited in advance to the School Student-Staff Forums. Ideally, these dates should be set for the whole year, so students can plan. If the forums haven’t been scheduled yet, please aim to hold them in weeks 7 or 8.

  4. After the forums, a summary of the feedback and the school’s response will be shared with the reps, the Student Union, and the Student Success team. This summary should go out before the next meeting between the AHoS and the reps. The SU can provide a template for this if needed.
