How We Work

We’re Goldsmiths Students' Union, a democratic and charitable organisation that works independently from Goldsmiths, University of London to represent and support you, the students.

Goldsmiths Students’ Union is a democratic and charitable organisation that works independently from Goldsmiths, University of London to represent and support you, the students. Inside of the Students' Union building, known as the Tiananmen Building, you will find your four full-time officers, who are elected by Goldsmiths students to represent them. You will also find the SU supporting staff who oversee the operational aspects of the SU from day to day. This building also houses the Natura Cafe on the first floor (our Vegetarian and Vegan Cafe), and The Stretch, our nightclub and bar on the second floor.

We aim to cater for every student, and have set up a vast range of campaigns, volunteering projects, activities, and social events for you to get involved in. Our events come in all shapes and sizes, from amazing club nights and live music in The Stretch, to comedy nights in Natura and even Silent Discos outside the Library. Enjoy The Stretch, our award winning, 550 capacity bar and event space, located on the top floor of the Students’ Union building. With weekly events including Open Mic Night, Quiz Night, Activities Night and Club Sandwich, you’ll always have something to go to. We offer a student-led events programme, this means that if there is an event you want to hold, we can work with you to make it possible.

Our Activities Team is here to enhance your experience at Goldsmiths, whether it’s being a member of a Sports Club or Society, putting on an event in our venue (The Stretch) or volunteering in various projects across the year, we’ve got you covered. Choose from our diverse range of Societies; student-led groups where like-minded individuals can get together and share their interests. Joining a Society is a great way to get involved with your community, university and union while making a difference and meeting new friends. Or get involved with our student-run Sports teams, to keep active and benefit from team spirit. Both competitive and recreational sports are widely available to participate in.

How we Represent You.

At Goldsmiths Students’ Union, we’re lucky to have one of the most engaged, critical, and active student communities anywhere in the world, and we are proud that our representational work reflects this. We see students as part of an academic community, and believe that meaningful student participation in academic life includes having a say and being heard on any and every issue that affects them. Our representation is based around elected student representatives, departmental student coordinators, and staff.

Your Students’ Union is run by students, having four full-time officers, elected by students, to represent and voice your needs, as well as a number of part-time officers to help direct how the SU is organised, supported by a team of staff who oversee the operational aspects of the SU. These range from Student Assembly representative members to student trustees, all of whom are chosen by you. Each year these positions are opened up for election, where any current student can vote and run as a candidate, ensuring that you have a choice of who runs your union and of its direction. We hold five Student Assemblies a year, a democratic forum to ensure that you can voice any issues you have and have your say on how the organisation is shaped through policies and motions.

If you feel the SU or the representative officers aren't doing what they should be, we have a number of forums in which you can hold them to account, most notably the Student Assembly. The Student Assembly is a meeting of the full-time and part-time officers to discuss their actions and current projects, as well as to vote on proposals and suggestions put forward by students. It is during these meetings that you as a student can bring about real change within your SU.

Investing in You.

Goldsmiths Students' Union is a registered charity which receives a grant of about £600,000 from Goldsmiths, University of London. We use this to invest in activities and services to improve your student experience while at Goldsmiths. We also generate a small surplus from the trading services we run which we invest in improving what we offer for you. These services include the G Shop, The Stretch, the gym and the nursery.

Above all, we are about investing in you. We ensure that all our funds go into free advice services, democracy and representation, volunteering, sports clubs and a variety of societies. We believe that every student at Goldsmiths is special and deserves the best educational and extracurricular experience. We have an incredibly diverse membership made up of students from all over the world. We believe we’re stronger because of our democratic structures that ensure you direct the way your union is run.
