Frustration over missed lectures during the pensions strike is understandable, although we don’t believe it’s our lecturers you should be angry at. Read why we, the Students' Union, support the action here.
However, compensation may be available. You will need to make a formal complaint on an individual basis. We recommend you follow our steps below:
1. Compensation can be made through the formal complaint process. Please fill in this form here. We will also be holding a workshop on the complaints procedure with opportunities for anonymous questions. In the meantime, we ask you to write to our Warden at firstname.lastname@example.org to request that lecturers have their requests listened to and acted on, and that you wish to receive compensation.
2. Learning from past strikes, it is better to put in a complaint after the end of the industrial action. This means that you can include everything that has happened in one form.
3. To stand the best change, make sure you keep a diary of how you have been affected.
4. Keep any evidence. This could include transport tickets or emails about the strikes.
5. Make sure you include information about how you've been particularly badly affected (for example, highlight if you have a disability or learning difficulty that has been adversely affected due to lack of teaching.) Students with placements could also be badly affected.
6. Please note, there is no precedent for getting the whole amount of tuition fees paid - as tuition fees are seen as not only covering the teaching, they also cover library and student services as well. You could potentially ask for 50% of the missed teaching but won’t necessarily be guaranteed success.
7. Your compensation would also depend on what your department has done in order to reduce the effect of the missed teaching (for example, if your department put the slides for missed lectures on the VLE, you may receive less than where they hadn't).
