VOTE WESTON #1 for LGBTQ+ OFFICER
My name is Charlotte Weston and I’m running for the position of LGBTQ+ officer because the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ students is under attack and we need to fight back!
I am bisexual, non-binary and I perform as a drag king under the stage name Just Hugo. I am a postgraduate student studying an MA in Filmmaking: Screen Documentary. My pronouns are She/They.
As a Marxist I believe that it is ultimately capitalism that is responsible for the oppression of LGBTQ+ people and as such the struggle against our oppression is intimately linked with the fight for socialism. Pride started as a riot and it’s that same militant spirit we need to channel today!
2020 brought a pandemic and a devastating economic crisis which affected millions of people and has disproportionately affected LBGTQ+ people, many of whom have been made unemployed or homeless.
Our mental health has suffered dramatically for those of us locked down in unsupportive homes. And we have watched as the Tory government has not only made all this worse by its handling of the pandemic but has cynically exploited the opportunity to propose reforms to the Gender Recognition Act which would strip away the rights of trans people.
During my time at Goldsmiths, I founded and was the president of the Goldsmiths Marxist Society, through which I worked to support the Justice for Cleaners campaign and built student solidarity with striking lecturers. I am currently involved in organising the Goldsmiths Rent Strike to help defend students against the appalling conditions in halls and exploitative rents demanded by the university. I also organised and hosted a drag king cabaret for freshers called Gayrage.
The health and well-being of LGBTQ+ students is an issue for ALL students and can only be guaranteed if we're unashamed in standing up for ourselves. As your elected LGBTQ+ officer I will:
Fight to ensure the victory of the Rent Strike so that LGBTQ+ students can return to safe accommodation they can afford.
Oppose commodification of LGBTQ+ students at Goldsmiths and put the politics back into pride!
Work with LGBTQ+ students to identify the impact of COVID-19 on our community and campaign for more support from the university.
Organise LGBTQ+ History Month events that centre on learning from the rich history of our community's militant struggles.
Organise against all barriers to education for LGBTQ+ students, from fighting prejudice on campus to campaigning for free education and maintenance grants for all students
Be a proud and unapologetic voice for socialism in your Student Union.
