Goldsmiths Students’ Union has led some amazing campaigns over the past few years. We’ve had a strong sense of community commitment as well as a shared value of catering services to the most marginalised on our campuses and in the local area. From securing £140K funding per year for refugee and asylum seeker scholarships to creating a hate crime reporting function at our institution, we have won for students and created a platform for others to do the same.

Refugee Scholarships - a proposal asking for the creation of six scholarship places for refugees and asylum seekers, as well as free accommodation and an £11,000 per year living bursary. The scheme was later renamed the ‘International Response Scholarship Fund’ so that there is capacity for increasing its reach in the future.

International Student Guarantor Scheme - Goldsmiths is one of the few universities that provides a rent guarantor scheme for international student tenants in the private sector. Here is the breakdown of how this operates, as provided by the University’s Student Services team.

Hate Crime Reporting Centre - We are in the process of setting up a hate crime reporting function at Goldsmiths. We’ve been accredited by the local council and are now in a process of students and the community feeding into how they’d like to see this operate. This paper will demonstrate the steps taken to get to this point, and how other students' unions can do something similar.
