NUS National Conference

Last month, our elected Goldsmiths SU delegation represented students at NUS conference.

Last month, our elected Goldsmiths SU delegation represented students at NUS conference. Three delegates were elected by cross campus vote back in March. They subsequently represent our students at the National Conference, vote on national policy and elect NUS full time officers.

We are proud to be a Union that champions diversity and liberation. Our delegation, therefore, was especially keen to support key motions like a full time Trans* Officer and autonomous NUS Trans* Campaign, tackling Anti Semitism in our movement, and reiterating our support for Anti Racism and tackling hate crime on campus.

It’s because of these values and our commitment to representing those most marginalised among us that we were part of electing Malia Bouattia as National President, becoming the first BME, Muslim woman to hold the position. Malia has a strong track record of fighting for those most oppressed, from battling the PREVENT agenda, to launching the Liberate My Degree campaign, to demanding an institutional racism review for NUS. Her election will mean more grassroots organising, more platform for underrepresented students, the continued fight for free education, and a more accountable NUS leadership team.

In recent days, however, she has become the centre of a disgusting, racist and sexist string of attacks against her. While students have the absolute right to hold their officers to account, racially and religiously fuelled rhetoric is unacceptable. With that said, we understand that some students may have concerns, and we are committed to hearing these and finding ways of addressing them together. The officers of Goldsmiths Students' Union stand in solidarity with Malia and will continue to support her in her fight for a free, liberated education that represents all of our members.

If any student would like to discuss this further with the SU president or any of the delegates, please get in touch via email.
