Would you like to make a change in your Students’ Union? Are you passionate about student life and want to contribute to its improvement? Do you want to inspire students to change the world? Elections are coming up! Being an elected representative can allow you to play a big role on campus and become the difference you want to see in Goldsmiths Student’s Union.
Â
Conrad Grant, the current President of the Students’ Union, said: “Running for an officer position is definitely one of my most memorable moments during university. During the week of voting you get to run your own campaign and interact with students finding out their main issues, which in itself is a great experience.Â
Â
“Being a Sabbatical Officer gives students the platform and tools to make genuine change to the community and the lives of students.“
Â
Any student, apart from visiting students, can run in elections. There is a variety of positions available, from full-time sabbatical officers to part-time voluntary officers, NUS delegates, student trustees and student media managers. Job shares are available for part-time officers and student media positions. You can find the complete list at the bottom of the article.
Â
Nominations open on January 20 at 10am and candidates have until February 10 to submit their application, complete with a poster and a manifesto explaining your ideas. Need guidance? A pool of mentors will be available during elections time to advise candidates to sabbatical positions. Ibby Mehmet, the Democracy and Governance Manager, will host manifesto open sessions while nominations are open to help all candidates create publicity and manifestos.
Â
All candidates will be briefed about the elections process on February 10, before campaigning opens on February 24 around college. Manifestos will be available to read on the SU website, along with promotional videos of the candidates telling you why you should elect them.Â
Â
The heart of the campaign are the two Question Time nights, where candidates will try to convince their fellow students they are the best candidate by giving a statement and answering questions. Students are invited to attend, or can watch the live stream or follow the #gsuelections tag on social media.
Â
Polling will be open from 10am on March 4 to 4pm on March 7. Elections will then climax from 8pm, when results are revealed at our traditional Beers, Tears and Cheers night!
