Sports Officer Manifesto

I am currently the captain of the Goldsmiths Rugby team and am currently in my second year of study, however, all to often I have found within Goldsmiths that sport is often overlooked for a whole host of reasons.

If elected as sports officer, I will look to raise the profile of sports within Goldsmiths to new and existing students. During freshers week 2015 I spoke to many students, both new and existing, who didn’t realise the diverse range of sports teams that our university has. Just within the rugby team, we have had new members who have only joined in their third year and did not realise before now that the team even existed. I would try to ensure that during freshers week 2016, the sports teams are given all support possible to attract new members.

I have seen first hand how joining a sports team can help a new student away from home seeking to make new friends and stay healthy. Whether joining as a full member of a team or as a social member, being involved with a team of people who look out for each other from the get go at uni is invaluable and I will be at the forefront of encouraging new students to get involved in one of our sports teams.

My main aim as the sports officer would be to help the committee’s of our sports teams attract and retain players, using my own experience as a committee member to help them overcome obstacles to this. Whilst Goldsmiths will never be a sporty university, there is no need for sport to be overlooked and it can bring a lot of benefits to individuals. Whether someone is a beginner or have been playing a sport their entire life, all students should have easy access to our sports societies and I want to help provide that access.
