SHONA WALNE

If I’m elected as Disabled Students Officer, I will try my best to work for all Goldsmiths’ students with disabilities of any kind, aiming to be led by students’ needs. I want to be a strong voice to represent students with disabilities at Goldsmiths, working on the issues that students tell me are important to them.

I know first hand what it’s like to deal with some of the official systems in place for accessing support, and I was lucky earlier this year to have some advice and support from the current Disabled Students Officer that really helped me. I hope that as next year’s Officer, I can provide that same support to students.

As Disabled Students Officer I would:

  • Resist cuts to support for students with disabilities

Many of us are worried about whether we will continue to be able to get the support we need, and I want to hold our university to account in supporting disabled students.

  • Support students in accessing the services they need.

I want it to be simpler for students to find out what support we should be entitled to, and to get access to it.

  • Push for accessibility of all kinds on campus

Students have already been doing some amazing work around this issue and I want to do everything I can to make sure that it’s continued.

  • Provide peer support and advice

I hope I can be someone that students with disabilities can come to with the issues they’re facing, and help them get the support they need.

  • Raise awareness of disability issues among Goldsmiths students

Many students and staff seem unaware of the issues faced by students with disabilities, and I’d like to raise awareness and get the wider student body involved with campaigns.
