TARA MARIWANY

Hi, my name is Tara and I’m a third-year Politics student running to be your next Welfare & Diversity Officer! Feel free to contact me via ss301tm@gold.ac.uk if you have any questions or would like this manifesto in an alternative format.

I believe in free, liberated education that reflects the diversity of our students and global population. I was involved in the launch of Diversifying the Curriculum at Goldsmiths, as well as our BME network. I’ve also been president of the Palestine Society for the past 2 years, and was elected as Part Time Palestine Twinning Officer twice, meaning I’m extremely familiar with the way our Students’ Union operates and caters to students.

Vote for me as your #1 Welfare and Diversity officer to ensure the implementation of the following policies:

Empowering Liberation Projects:

  • Protecting & empowering marginalised students and fighting for their right to organise on their own terms – safe spaces for women, black students, LGBTQ+ students, disabled students, survivors, and sex workers
  • Working with elected Women’s and LGBTQ+ Officers to develop and launch an anti-sexual harassment campaign and strategy for our union & university
  • Fighting for mandatory mental health and disability training for all staff at Goldsmiths
  • Campaigning for Post-study Work Visas and better support for International students facing rising anti-Immigration rhetoric
  • Providing solid support to Part-time Officers to ensure they can deliver for the students they represent

Contextualising Goldsmiths:

  • Integrating an increasingly alienated study body into New Cross
  • Creating pathways for students’ projects to benefit the range of local communities
  • Working with local grassroots organisations for mutually valuable links around issues like mental health, childcare provision, and gentrification

Education for Liberation:

  • Campaigning against the racist and Islamophobic PREVENT agenda, and working with staff unions to build a strong #EducatorsNotInformants presence
  • Fighting against welfare cuts, including the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)
  • Using available funds to campaign for increased and immediate hardship funds
  • Tackling the BME attainment gap and continuing to diversify the curriculum

Strengthening Student Societies

  • Reviving BME, Women’s, Disabled, LGBTQ+ Networks and building on their foundations to generate educational, social, and communal support systems
  • Facilitating collaboration between societies and sport clubs to create safer, intersectional spaces accessible to all members
