Candidate for the position of Palestine Twinning Officer

MISS ALESSIA CANCEMI MISS MONA MOUNIR

Hi, we’re Mona and Alessia, first year sociology and media students and second year Anthropology and Sociology students, respectively, and running for the position of Palestine Twinning Officers.

During our time as Palestine Twinning Officers, our main priority is to raise awareness. We will encourage students to join the Goldsmiths Palestine Campaign and therefore discuss events in meetings and provide the society members with regular news updates regarding the humanitarian aspects of the situation. Increased awareness will help increase action taken to support the cause on campus and nation-wide.

Goldsmiths Palestine Campaign is proud of its strong links with Palestinian societies of other London Universities and we will continue working together to give Goldsmiths students the chance to partake in events. The society’s connections with universities in Palestine are strengthened by the annual trip to the occupied territories. We were honoured to host a delegation of students from Al-Quds University in January of 2015. We will work to strengthen the ties with the two twinned universities Al-Quds and the Islamic University of Gaza, and believe it is most crucial to support Palestinian students at this very moment to project their voices. Because of this, we will work to ensure that the scholarships for two Palestinian students are not threatened, but we will also campaign to add an extra space for a student specifically from Gaza, as the attacks of Summer 2014 have deeply affected access to education. Above all, we believe the importance of this position is showing the University’s solidarity towards the Palestinian people, while campaigning and gaining knowledge on the situation.
