EVA CROSSAN JORY

Hello! My name is Eva Crossan Jory and I’m currently studying BA Fine Art & Art History. As your Campaigns and Activities Officer I’d hope to balance both aspects of this role by ensuring that current campaigns as well as problems facing sports and societies are tackled in equal measure. Having worked in various jobs at the Students' Union over the past two years as well as being President of the Visual Cultures Society I feel that I am well placed to take on the responsibilities and demands of this role.

Campaigns

  • Campaign for Goldsmiths to increase funding for the Students' Union in line with the increasing intake of students.

  • Regular monthly meetings for students and part time officers to raise campaign issues and problems that need addressing.

  • Work with the housing officers to ensure a rent freeze in halls, as well as providing students with more advice on private renting.

  • Continue to support the campaign for Free Education.

  • Keep the Student Union Bar open, with kegs not cans!

Activities

  • We need a properly equipped sports hall on campus.

  • Give more support to sports and societies, including more funding and better access to practice/meeting spaces.

  • Ensure that all students have Wednesday afternoon free for practice.

  • Give students the opportunity to receive minibus driver training so that journeys to fixtures are easier.

  • Ensure that all societies have access to the technical equipment in the stretch.

I believe one of the biggest struggles the Students' Union faces is the lack of funding it receives from Goldsmiths. I want to campaign for Goldsmiths to increase their funding of the SU to reflect the larger student intake to ensure that we are able to meet the needs of all students. This includes access to counselling services, sports & activities and access to affordable housing and advice and would allow for more funding for all GSU projects.

I believe that Sports Clubs and Societies are one of the greatest opportunities for students to engage with others and find those with similar interests. Students should be appreciated for all the hard work they put in so I want to create a stronger support network for presidents and captains to ensure that their teams and societies can be as successful as possible. I will campaign for a sports hall on campus, with all the necessary equipment for our sports teams, to ensure there is a safe space for all teams to train. This would be made possible by using some of the millions of pounds received by Goldsmiths when they privatised a large number of their halls.

This would also make the Stretch available to be used by the societies that want to stage performances and events. I will ensure that the Student Union Bar remains open, with an emphasis on it becoming a more open and affordable social space with kegs instead of cans!

If elected I will hold a regular monthly open meeting for students and officers to suggest campaigns that they want help with, Through this, I aim to ensure that all students feel able to approach me and that together we can not only focus on the larger campaigns such as free education for all but also smaller ones that are just as significant, such as campaigning against the high cost of food on campus.

I will work with the Housing Officers to continue the housing campaign and ensure that students both in halls and private accommodation have a support network of advice and services to make renting as stress free as possible. I will also campaign for a rent freeze in halls, where there is a fear it may get raised due to recent privatisation.

I hope to increase the number of student staff within the Students Union, giving more students access to paid experience in events, tech, bar etc. I also want to hire a member of student staff to be the designated driver for the mini van, meaning that transport to games and trips for societies are catered for. I hope that in doing so we would be able to provide useful training for all student staff, to give them necessary experience for their future careers.

If elected I would work closely with the part time officers to ensure that students are represented from all areas of the university. I believe that education should always come before profit and will campaign for Goldsmiths to focus less on gimmicky marketing techniques and more on the quality of education students receive.
